Finding a client

Every client should have one profile in HMIS. To find their profile, click FIND CLIENT.

If you know your client's unique HMIS ID number, you can search by HMIS ID. Otherwise, you can search by first and last name. In some cases, a client's name might be spelled differently or they have previously used a nickname, so we recommend you search a few times. You can even search with just an initial or the first few letters of their name.

Click Search to see the results, then click on the row with your client to select them.

You can even use the Alias Search at the bottom of the screen for an even broader search of known names.

What if the client's name is wrong in HMIS? As long as you can confirm the profile in question belongs to the same client, you can change their name on the CLIENT INFORMATION screen. The name in HMIS does not have to be their legal name; rather, you should enter the name they most often use. You can record aliases under the CLIENT INFORMATION screen.

What if I have their HMIS ID but can't find them? It is possible the client had multiple IDs at some point and your system administrator had to merge records, resulting in a different ID. Simply note the new HMIS ID for future reference.

What if my client doesn't have an HMIS profile? You can always create a new client from scratch. Just launch into the INTAKE workflow and choose to create a new client.
