How Do Exits Work

In HMIS, users have the ability to manually exit clients from projects operated by their organization; this includes entering a project exit date, destination as well as answers to an exit assessment if applicable. With a community-wide initiative like Coordinated Entry, the CE lead agency can also exit clients upon learning they have been permanently housed.

To exit a client from your project, find the client’s enrollment record, click the action button, then select “EXIT ENROLLMENT”. The exit workflow will guide you through the process, allowing you to exit household members as well.

Enrollment Actions

HMIS also has the ability to automatically exit a client from a project after a period of inactivity, such as not receiving a service in 30 days. These are the following types of projects that use "auto exit": Coordinated Entry; Emergency Shelter using Check In Records; and, Street Outreach.

When a client is auto exited, the system will exit them as of date of their last activity such as most recent check-out date from shelter or most recent street outreach contact, depending on the project type. Since the client's outcome is unknown, the system will record a "no interview completed" as the "destination" from the project.

If an activity wasn't recorded thus causing an auto exit, the enrollment can be re-entered or re-opened, at which point, the user can back enter missing activity. To re-enter an auto-exited enrollment, simply click VIEW CASE MEMBERS and select that option.
